BEYOND THE CANVAS — FAQ
How does pricing work?
Because every project is unique, Beyond the Canvas projects are quoted individually. Pricing is based on the scope of the project, size, design complexity, materials, preparation required, and estimated studio time.
For residential and select commercial murals, pricing also depends on the size and complexity of the design, the condition of the surface, and accessibility of the painting area.
Once I know a little more about what you have in mind, I’ll provide a personalized quote before we move forward.
What can you create?
Beyond the Canvas is all about taking art somewhere unexpected.
I've created custom artwork on guitars, surfboards, shoes, bicycles and more, and I also take on residential and select commercial murals for spaces such as salons, med spas, restaurants, bars, boutiques, offices and other businesses.
Mural projects are considered individually based on the concept, scale, location and accessibility of the space.
Over the years, I've even designed, built and hand-painted custom wooden props and decorative pieces for stages, events and parties. So if you have an unusual idea that doesn't quite fit into a traditional art category, don't be afraid to ask.
Every project is considered individually based on the concept, materials, scale and what's realistically possible.
For custom-painted items, do I provide the item?
In most cases, yes. You can provide an item you already own or source something specifically for your project.
Before beginning, we'll discuss the material, condition, and surface to make sure it's suitable for painting. If you're not sure what type of item would work best, I'm happy to discuss options with you before you purchase anything.
Does my item need to be prepared first?
It depends on the project.
Some items require very little preparation, while others may need cleaning, sanding, priming, wax removal, or other surface preparation before I can begin painting.
Additional preparation may affect the final cost, which is why each project is evaluated and quoted individually.
For example, guitars should arrive disassembled and unstrung with removable hardware, knobs, etc. taken off. Finished guitars will be returned painted and sealed, but will need to be professionally reassembled and restrung by the client.
Surfboards are preferably provided clean and unwaxed. Reclaimed or previously used boards can absolutely be considered, but wax removal and additional surface preparation may add time and cost to the project.
I'll provide specific preparation instructions for your item before you send or deliver anything.
What materials do you use?
Materials vary depending on the surface and project, but may include acrylic paint, inks, paint markers, specialty mediums and protective finishes.
Each project is prepared and finished according to the surface I'm working on, and completed pieces are sealed with an appropriate protective finish.
Can I choose the design?
Absolutely. We'll discuss your ideas, preferred colors, imagery, and overall direction before I begin.
My custom work is still created in my artistic style, so rather than reproducing another artist's work or copying an existing design, I'll use your ideas as inspiration to create something uniquely yours.
Can you paint used or sentimental items?
Possibly! I love the idea of giving an existing piece new life.
Because used and vintage items can vary greatly in condition and materials, I'll need to see photos and evaluate the piece before confirming whether it's suitable for painting.
How long does a custom project take?
Turnaround times vary depending on the type of project, size, level of detail, preparation required, and my current studio schedule.
I generally work pretty quickly, but every project is different. Smaller custom pieces may require significantly less time than a large or highly detailed piece.
For residential and commercial murals, the timeline will depend on the scale of the wall, complexity of the design, surface preparation, accessibility, and the amount of on-site painting required.
Before your project begins, I'll provide an estimated timeline along with your quote so you'll know what to expect.
If you're hoping to have something completed for a birthday, holiday, event, grand opening, or another special date, please mention that when you inquire and I'll let you know what's possible.
Do you accept shipped projects?
Yes, depending on the item. Smaller pieces may be shipped to my San Diego studio, while larger or unusually shaped items may require local drop-off/pickup or special arrangements.
Shipping and return shipping costs are the responsibility of the client unless otherwise included in the quote.
How do I get started?
Send me an inquiry with a few details about what you have in mind. If you already own the item, including a few clear photos and approximate dimensions is especially helpful.
From there, we can talk through your idea, what's possible, preparation requirements, timeline, and pricing.
